A time of new beginnings, fertility, love and life. From the ancient Greeks to the Romans and Egyptian, Spring Festivals dedicated to deities were an important part of the culture. These festivals often involved rituals of sacrifice, flower offerings, grand feasts and celebrations. Modern cultures also welcome the Spring time with their own set of rituals and festivals.

Easter and Passover are popular celebrations of Spring. Similarly Asian cultures also have their own spring festivals. The Chinese welcome the Spring by lighting Garden Lanterns and the Spring Festival is one of their most important events where friends and family get together and appreciate the good things in life. In India and Pakistan, the Spring is welcomed by celebrating the famous kite festival, locally known as “Basant”. In the villages country fairs are also arranged. Spring Celebrations in U.K.: In the U.K., Spring is welcomed with open hearts. The spirits are high and people participate in fun events to celebrate the most beautiful time of year. Spring events in the U.K are one of their kind, from tumbling down the hill after a sturdy ball of cheese to tossing a Wellington boot as far as possible, all sorts of exciting activities take place at spring time in UK. A couple of old traditions that are still in practice include “Bottle Kicking and the Hare Scramble” and “Jack in the Green Spade.” Both these events originated in the 18th century and are still popular. Bottle Kicking and the Hare Scramble: This festival starts off with a parade in the villages and later opposing sides compete for the “bottle”-actually a barrel- wrestling their way over miles of ditches, streams and hedges to determine the winner. The lore behind this custom states that a hare dashed by and diverted an angry bull from attacking two women. These village women celebrated their narrow escape by baking hare pie and serving it with beer to their neighbours. With the passage of time, the hare pie was replaced by beef pie. Jack in the Green Spade: This 18th century parade takes place in Hastings, East Sussex, and is a spectacle to watch. The parade is lead by Green Jack: a 9 feet tall creature decked out with branches, leaves and twigs. He is followed by a procession of one thousand dancers who march from the old town to the castle. The atmosphere is further charged up by the entrancing beats of bearded drummers following the procession. At the final destination of this parade, Jack is slain by the village folk to “free the spirit of summer” as per tradition.
