Trachelium Flowers - London Uk

Name : Trachelium Flowers
Latin Name : Genus: Trachelium, (Trachelium caeruleum)
Trachelium Description

Trachelium is a genus comprising of about half a dozen species of perennial herbs belonging to the Campanula Family, Campanulaceae. Tracheliums originated from Portugal and are native to the West and Central Mediterranean region.

Common names for the Trachelium flower include Throatwort, Blue Lace flower and Blue Throatwort. The Trachelium derives its botanical or Latin name from the Greek word trachelos, meaning "neck,” while the common name throatwort is also a reference to its alleged ability to alleviate throat diseases.

Trachelium or Throatworts bear dome-shaped flower heads several inches across that are crowded with hundreds of tiny, tubular amethyst, yellow, pink or white blossoms that are reminiscent of Alliums. Trachelium foliage is lance-shaped and toothed, with leaves in hues of cordovan purple or deep green brushed with plum highlights. Trachelium leaves are smooth-textured and evergreen, providing colour throughout the year. Trachelium stays in blooms over a long season displaying showy flowers from summer to fall. Trachelium plants grow to about 3 feet tall and wide. Care must be taken when handling Trachelium plant as it may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction.

Trachelium or Throatwort prefers neutral to slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Plant your Throatwort in a spot in full sun with some shade in the heat of the day. Trachelium is drought-tolerant once established.

Throatworts or Trachelium are propagated by seed sown in a cold frame when ripe or at 55° to 60°F in spring. They can also be sown directly in the spot where they are to bloom in late spring after the danger of frost has passed. Another method for propagation is by rooted cuttings that may be over-wintered in a protected place.

Trachelium is a relatively low maintenance plant and requires very little up keep once established. Look out for aphids and spider mites as these may cause problems and hinder growth. Trachelium is an excellent garden plant with showy flowers and foliage. It brightens up the garden with its abundant blossoms, and stays in bloom over a long period of time. Trachelium is also known to attract bees and butterflies and will thus add to the natural beauty of your landscape. Trachelium is a good choice if you are considering an herb garden or a cottage style garden. Throatwort looks great in perennial borders and flower beds. It can also be treated as an annual and works equally well in containers as well. Trachelium is also suitable for xeriscaping.

Trachelium also provides excellent cut flowers that are commercially available all year round. Trachelium is a great filler flower that provides textural contrast in arrangements. It can be used to complement other blossoms in a flower arrangement. Trachelium has a vase life of 7-10 days, which makes it an ideal choice for flower arrangements and bouquets. It is perfect for weddings as it can blend well into any theme, has a long vase life and is available all year round. A little care needs to be taken in order to lengthen its vase life as Trachelium is a very thirsty flower that will wilt quickly if left out of water.
