Eremurus Flowers
Name : Eremurus Flowers
Latin Name : Genus: Eremurus (Eremurus stenophyllus)
Eremurus Description
Eremurus is a genus comprising of 35-40 deciduous perennial flowers, from the Lily Family (Liliaceae). They are native to western and central Asia particularly Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan; whereas in Britain, it has been in cultivation since 1875.
Common names include Foxtail Lilies, King's Spears, Giant Asphodels and Desert Candles. “Eremurus” is from the Greek words “eremia” meaning “desert” and “oura” meaning “tall” and thus the common name “desert candles”.
The Eremurus has an inflorescence that looks similar to a long spike or a bottlebrush consisting of many flowers in snow white, pastel pink, copper, bright yellow, orange or any combination of these colours.
Eremurus grows from about 2 to 8 feet tall and spread about 3 feet wide. Eremurus is known for being tall, and depending on the variety it may rise up to 10 feet over the foliage. It has spike-like racemes with dense clusters of small, star-shaped flowers. Eremurus leaves are green in colour and grow in tufts of slender, strappy strips while thick roots grow out from a central hub. These leaves die when the plants are in bloom, so foliage is rarely present with cut flowers.
Foxtail Lilies propagate by seeds or by division. Divide old plants when their crowns grow up and out of the soil but be careful as the roots are very brittle. Eremurus seeds are sown in early fall. Eremurus prefers a sunny, warm, sheltered area to protect them against strong winds. Eremurus blooms in late spring or early summer, and grow easily in ordinary, acid to neutral, well-drained but loamy soil. It is best that peat, decayed manure and plenty of sand is added to provide nutrients to the plant.
As a garden plant the spectacular tall spikes of Eremurus bloom before most of the other tall plants in your garden, so you can have a striking early border for other spring bulbs. Eremurus flowers are in bloom from March through August and are very popular as cut flowers. With proper care Eremurus flowers can last from 10 days to almost 3 weeks in a vase.
Since the spikes very tall and long-lasting, Eremurus makes an excellent choice for flower arrangements. In fresh form, they are the perfect choice for adding height to flower arrangements. Each Eremurus flower-spike is over one metre long and the beautiful starry flowers gradually open from the bottom to the tip of the spike, revealing long stamens. Cut Eremurus looks freshest when the bottom third of the flowers has opened, and the middle of the stem will have buds showing good color, and the tips will be tightly budded.
Popular varieties of Eremurus flowers include E. stenophyllus which produces 2- to 3-foot spikes of yellow or golden yellow flowers. E. robustus is another variety that can grow from 6 to 10 feet high and has deep pink flowers. Then we have E. himalaicus from the Himalayas, which grows 4 to 8 feet high and has white flowers and medium green foliage.
