Bupleurum Description

Bupleurum is a large genus of hardy plants belonging to the Carrot family (Apiaceae), represented by about 185-195 species. The genus comprises mostly of hardy annuals, perennials, biennials, and some evergreen shrubs. Bupleurum originate from Central and southern Europe, and Central Asia.

Common names for Bupleurum include Thoroughwax, Green Gold, and Hare's Ear.

Bupleurum is called chai hu in Chinese, meaning “kindling of the barbarians.” However, the source of this name is unclear.

Bupleurum is a multi branched plant with tiny yellowy green flowers at the ends of the stems. They thrive in full sun and average, well-drained soil. Blossoms are available in Spring/Summer. Bupleurum grow to about 18-24 inches in height. The inflorescence appears in the form of a compound umbel consisting of seven to twelve star-shaped, yellowish green flowers and surrounded by large green bracts. Bupleurum leaves are Bluish-green and somewhat rounded. Bupleurum flowers look like Euphorbia blossoms and its leaves look similar to eucalyptus.
Bupleurum propagate by seeds sowed in spring. Germination occurs in about 15 days.

Bupleurum are hardy plants and suffer from very few problems like Leafminers. Bupleurum adapts very well to growing in seashore gardens.

As a cut flower, Bupleurum is a fresh green flower, which proves to be an excellent accent filler with clusters of small yellow flowers contrasted against larger smooth leaves. This delicate green blossom can be used to add a touch of elegance to a bridal bouquet or a table centerpiece. It adds texture and colour depth to virtually any flower arrangement. Although Bupleurum flowers look sleepy and thirsty upon arrival, they will look beautifully radiant and fresh after being hydrated for a few hours. Expected vase life for Bupleurum is about 7-10 days. It blends extremely well with vibrantly coloured leaves and can be used in both fresh and dried designs.
