Brodea Flowers

Brodea Flowers

Name : Brodea Flowers
Latin Name : Genus: Brodea, (Brodiaea laxa)
Brodea Description

Brodiaea is a genus of about 16 species of beautiful flowering plants, belonging to the Lily Family (Liliaceae). Brodiaea species are native to the West Coast of the United States, especially northern California. Specimens of Brodiaea were first collected by Archibald Menzies, the botanist to the Vancouver Expedition, in 1792. He discovered the plant near the Strait of Georgia, named New Georgia by George Vancouver.

Brodiaea are also known by the common name Cluster-Lilies. Other common names include Long Rayed Triteleia, Pretty Face, Grassnut, and Triplet Lily.

Brodiaea are herbaceous perennials and propagate both by black seeds and brown fibrous-coated corms. The corms should be planted in autumn in full sun. Make sure there is sufficient space between the corms. Brodiaea prefer a well-drained soil that is light and loose and produce bigger corms in this condition. Their inflorescence is umbel-shaped and has from 3 to 11 flowers. Brodiaea flowers are bell-shaped and their colour varies from bluish purple, pinkish purple to rose.

Brodiaea was once a greater California Central Valley plant, extending in vast numbers across the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys. But due to factors like farming, overgrazing and urban development this plant is becoming rare. Brodiaea is also found in northwestern California, the Cascade Range, the central and northern Sierra Nevada and British Columbia at an elevation range from 0 to 1600 m. Brodiaea can survive in different geographical conditions like valley grassland, mixed conifer forests, foothill woodland, and volcanic mesas.

Popular varieties include Tritelia (Brodiaea laxa), Appendage Brodiaea (Brodiaea appendiculata), Dwarf Brodiaea (Brodiaea terrestris) and Chaparral Brodiaea (Brodiaea jolonensis). Brodiaea pallida is a rare species and is known by the common name Chinese Camp Brodiaea. It is common to Tuolumne County, California, where it is found in the form of a single population about a quarter of a mile long and 10 to 20 feet wide near Chinese Camp. Its inflorescence is about 20 centimeters tall with pale purple flowers on short pedicels.
