Bouvardia Flowers

Bouvardia Flowers

Name : Bouvardia Flowers
Latin Name : Genus: Bouvardia, (Bouvardia longiflora)
Bouvardia Description

Bouvardia is a genus of about 30 species of evergreen herbs and shrubs belonging to the Rubiaceae family. Bouvardia are native to tropical America, and are found in Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico, down to Central America.

Common names for this flower include Scarlet bourvardia, Trompetilla, Firecracker bush and Clavillo.

These lovely flowers have been named after Charles Bouvard, who was the personal physician to King Louis XIII and the superintendent of the Royal Gardens in Paris. He introduced these flowers to the United Kingdom in the 19th century.

Bouvardia are grown in a greenhouse. They have thin, erect stems and small, dark green leaves. In the fall and winter, Bouvardia are covered with clusters of single or double flowers in soft shades of pink, white, yellow, salmon and red. The flowers are shaped like slender tubes, opening at the top into four petals in cross formation.

These beautiful, star-like flowers are known to attract hummingbirds since their spectacular red corolla is filled with nectar. The Spanish name, Trompetilla, which means “little trumpet”, refers to the shape of the corolla which resembles a trumpet. Bouvarida should be kept in partial shade. Their height varies depending on different varieties and may range between 0.6-1.5m. Bouvardia propagate by cuttings of new shoots, or root cuttings in March. Blossoms are available from May to November depending on different varieties.

Bouvardia work very well as houseplants. In such condition, a minimum winter temperature of 7 °C is required, with a minimum of 12 °C while in flower. Sun and plenty of water provide excellent growing conditions.

Bouvardia are dainty flowers with soft colours and they bestow an air of femininity wherever they make an appearance. They also possess a faint delicate scent. They prove to be an excellent choice for bridal bouquets and fresh flower arrangements. As cut flowers, Bouvardia have a vase life of about 7-14 days.

The wild species of Bouvardia include B. longiflora and B. jasminiflora. Both these varieties have white, fragrant flowers. Modern varieties of Bouvardia include Pink Luck, Albatross, Royal Katty, Giant Pink and Christmas Red.
