Anthurium Description
Anthurium is a large genus of about 600- 800 species of plants, belonging to the Arum Family (Araceae). Anthuriums are herbaceous epiphytes, and are native to tropical America ranging from Mexico to northern Argentina and Uruguay. The name Anthurium has a Greek origin, and means “Tail Flower.” Anthuriums are commonly cultivated for their brightly coloured flower spathes and their attractive, ornamental leaves.
Common names for Anthurium include Flamingo Flower, Boy Flower, Painted Tongue, Painter’s Palette, Flamingo Lily or Tail Flower.
Anthriums are exotic and compelling, with bold, red flowers and shiny, dark green foliage. Other colours mostly include varying shades of red, white, yellow, pink, orange or green.
Anthuriums flowers are really a spathe, or waxy, modified leaf flaring out from the base of a fleshy spike (spadix) where the tiny real flowers grow. The spathe is usually red and is heart-shaped. The real flowers appear as a roughness on the spadix. The Anthurium stem may grow to a height of 15-20 inches depending on the size of the spathe, the bigger the spathe, the longer the stem. The leaves are usually simple, large and attractively coloured.
Anthuriums are popular foliage plants and can be grown by 4 methods: Vegetative reproducation, Seeds, Tissue culture, and Fertilization. Anthuriums are fairly easy to grow and under the proper environment, produce long lasting flowers all year round. Commercially, pot type Anthuriums are planted throughout the world. The potted Anthiriums are durable and will survive as an indoor foliage plant for a remarkable period of time, even under adverse conditions. Anthuriums require a highly organic soil with good water retention capability. The soil must also be well-drained prevent rotting of stems and roots.
Anthuriums thrive with day temperatures of 78 to 90 F, and night temperatures of 70 to 75 F. Temperatures above 90 F may cause burning of foliage, fading of flower color, and reduced flower life. Night temperatures between 40 to 50 F may cause slow growth and yellowing of lower leaves. However, this flower will not tolerate frost or freezing conditions.
Anthuriums are very popular tropical plants due to their long vase life of about six weeks and even more depending on the variety and season.
Different Anthurium varieties include Flowering, Velvet Leafed, Pendulous or Hanging basket types, and Palmate leafed. Examples are Anthurium andraeanum (Flamingo lily), Anthurium scandens (Pearl Laceleaf) and Anthurium scherzeranum (Flamingo Flower, Tailflower). Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum), is an unusual plant in the family Araceae. This plant has the largest inflorescence among the flowering plants in the world.
All parts of this plant are poisonous and may cause mild stomach disorders if ingested. The plant sap of Anthurium can cause skin irritation.
