Anemone Description

The beautiful Anemone or Windflower derives its name from the Greek word “??????” or “anemos” meaning 'wind'.

Anemone is a genus of 120 species of perennial flowering plants in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) in the north and south temperate zones. It can be found growing wild in many European countries, in North America, and Japan.

Common names for the enchanting Anemone include Windflower, Cut-leaved Anemone, Western Anemone, Drummond's Anemone and Three-leaved Anemone.

Anemone is common to both the plains and the mountains. It is a delicate, yet beautiful wildflower that blooms in spring and stays till the end of summer. The leaves are large, hairy and finely dissected with multiple lobes. The flowers are approximately 1 cm in diameter, with 5-8 petals which are actually sepals. The flowers are later replaced by a woolly, thimble-like cluster of hairy seeds. The plant can gain a height of about 45 cm. Anemones propagate by bulbs and are wonderful to use as shrub borders, woodland plantings, rock gardens, beds and borders. Anemone flowers close at night and on cloudy days to prevent moisture from entering.

Different varieties of Anemones have different growing requirements. Most Anemones are planted in the fall. Windflowers thrive in very well-drained, moderately fertile soil in a lightly shaded or sunny location.

Anemone flowers may not only be white, but dark blue, pink, red, white, purple and also bi-colour. It is also used as a small mass flower when mixed with other spring flowers.

Anemones have a vase life of 5 - 7 days depending on bud stage. Many varieties of Anemone look similar to a Poppy flower. Only a few varieties of Anemone are used as a commercial cut flower. These flowers prefer cool temperatures and open quickly in warm environments. Upon refrigeration, Anemones flowers will close and reopen once again when warm.

Among the most popular Anemone is the autumn-flowering Japanese Anemone (Anemone hupehensis). The Rue Anemone (Anemonella thallictroides) is an endangered specie. Other popular varieties include Anemone deltoidea (Three-leaved Anemone), Anemone drummondii (Drummond's Anemone), Anemone multifida (Cut-leaved Anemone), (Windflower) and Anemone occidentalis (Western Anemone).

Anemone Meaning

Anemones symbolize the meanings "Forsaken" and also "A Dying Hope". The Anemone blossom can also be used to signify Anticipation. In some cultures the Anemone flower is seen as the Emblem of Death due to its poisonous nature.

Anemone Mythology

The most interesting fact about the Wind Flower is the story behind its name. This beautiful flower inherits its name form Greek Mythology. According to the myth Adonis was wounded by Aphrodite's jealous ex-lover while he was hunting. When Aphrodite found his body, she sprinkled nectar on his wounds. As she carried his lifeless body out of the woods, Crimson Anemones sprang to life where drops of the nectar and his blood dripped to the ground. It is said then, that the wind which blows the blossoms open, will soon afterwards blow the petals away. That is why it’s called the Wind Flower, for that which brings its life forth, ends it.

Anemones have also been mentioned in the New Testament, where Jesus says that even “Solomon in all his glory is not arrayed” as beautifully as an anemone. Though the traditional English translation (King James Version) is usually portrayed as “lilies of the field”, the original Greek word “?????” (krina) is Anemone.

Anemone is also used medicinally as a treatment for cramps, menstrual problems and emotional distress. But one variety, Anemone nemorosa is poisonous to humans, but has been used as a medicine in the past as well.

In ancient Roman culture Anemone was used as a charm against fever. One variety of Anemones, the Anemone coronaria ("Kalanit" in Hebrew) is one of the most popular flowers in Israel. During the British Mandate of Palestine, British soldiers were nicknamed "Kalaniyot" for the colour of their crimson berets.
